A year ago when Miss America invited us to GO RED for women’s health I learned that cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women.
This was eye opening to me and inspired me to share how I stay active and healthy. An active lifestyle will look different for everybody, that’s why I share my experience and give examples of what it means to live a healthy lifestyle to me. This is unique to my life and there is no one size fits all approach to staying healthy. This is just what has worked for me!
Walking
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, walking is one of my favorite ways to stay active. Walking is so underrated because a lot of people don’t think it’s as beneficial as other forms of working out. But daily walks outside can boost your vitamin D, give you time for mindfulness, improve your cardiovascular health and so much more. If you’re looking for a way to start being more active, this is a great place to start!
Pilates
This is probably my first choice when it comes to building strength. I took a Pilates class last year in school and loved the mind body connection Pilates encourages. As a dancer, Pilates also incorporates movement that simulates what I’m doing when I dance which I’ve found very beneficial. The biggest downfall with this method of exercise is how expensive it is, but it’s truly worth every penny. If you can afford it, definitely give it a try!
Gym
A workout set doesn’t make or break your healthy lifestyle, but it certainly is fun! That’s why I wear my red Rebel Athletic Wear when I’m in need of some extra motivation. A cute gym fit can make all the difference, seriously. When I go into the gym, I like to start with a warmup on the elliptical or bike and then focus on upper or lower body. I also try to do some abs to really work from my center during my entire workout.
Food is Fuel
What you eat is also a huge part of living a healthy lifestyle. Now, I’m not here to tell you not to eat a slice of cake. Life is too short to restrict yourself entirely from every food that has sugar and might bring you joy. Depending on your financial situation, it can also be really challenging to get healthy food to fuel your body. With that being said, there are smart choices you can make to help your body recover. Making sure each meal is balanced is a huge part of this and ensuring you’re getting whole grains, protein, healthy oils, fruits and vegetables is going to set you up for success.
Hiking
Hiking is hands down, my absolute favorite way to stay active. I love getting into nature and finding something to climb. Whether it be hiking the Wildcat Trail at Monument Valley or exploring Mesa Verde, this is a great way to get your heart rate up and see the world!
Choose your own adventure!
Living an active lifestyle doesn’t have to feel impossible or like this unattainable goal. The great thing about it, is you get to decide what active means to you and how you want to approach it. Whether it be going for daily walks, meal prepping dinners, or finding your passion for yoga, you can choose your own adventure and pick what’s fun and exciting to you!
